Competition Associate

We are looking to recruit an Associate to our Antitrust and Competition team into our Johannesburg or Cape Town office.

You will join to work with specialist competition lawyers Janine Simpson and Werner Rysbergen who have been involved in seminal transactions and jurisprudentially key competition matters during their careers. Janine and Werner have extensive experience in matters involving the South African competition authorities, as well as national and regional competition authorities in the rest of Africa, and have advised on a number of cross-border and multi-jurisdictional transactions.

The role can be based in either our Johannesburg or Cape Town office but will also require travel to client sites and our other international offices from time to time.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ABOUT YOU
We do not set upper or lower limits of PQE for any of our vacancies. We have however given an indicative PQE as an approximate guide for applicants. Candidates who have between 2 and 4 years PQE are likely to have the right level of knowledge and have gained the right level of experience needed to be able to undertake this role. Candidates are expected to have:
  • At least 2 years PQE competition law experience gained in a reputable competition practice
  • Have multi-disciplinary experience, including investigations, behavioural and merger control work
  • A commitment to technical excellence
  • Have experience working across jurisdictions and advising international clients
  • The ability to work co-operatively and collaboratively in a team, sharing information and knowledge
  • The ability to provide professional, quality service, executed in a timely manner and to respond effectively to requests from internal and external clients
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of current key legal and business issues
  • Experience of business development initiatives and the ability to identify ways to contribute collaboratively to the development of the teams relationships with clients
  • A desire to develop an effective network of internal and external contacts
  • Strong personal motivation, and a desire to manage and develop their own career path
