ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (TERM APPOINTMENT)

Overview Of The Department

The Department of Financial Management is in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS), which is the first faculty of its kind in Africa to be awarded the prestigious international business education accreditation by AACSB InternationalThe Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The Department aims to deliver quality students to auditing firms, high profile financial institutions and other key players in the South African economy.

The Faculty requires the services of a dynamic person of proven academic stature to lead the Department of Financial Management.

POSITION

The University seeks to appoint an Associate Professor/Professor and Head of Department. The Head of Department appointment will be additional to the successful candidates academic appointment.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
  • The strategic, academic, and operational management of the department;
  • Aligning the vision and objectives of the Department with the broader vision and objectives of the Faculty and the University;
  • Promoting, planning, organising, and managing academic and research programmes and the departments research profile;
  • Ensuring quality scholarly academic and professional education and training;
  • Managing all financial activities, including fundraising and externally funded projects;
  • Playing an active role as an academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Recruiting and managing of the academic and professional staff of the Department and promoting their continuous development, with a focus on diversity;
  • Providing and facilitating mentorship of young academics in the Department; and
  • Developing and sustaining external partnerships.
Minimum Requirements

Professor:
  • A relevant doctorate degree in financial sciences related fields and registration at a professional body;
  • 9 years tertiary teaching experience on undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • An established research focus and an independent research agenda with;
  • At least 15 accredited publications and/or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs and at least 3 of the publications and/or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs should be in the last 5 years (accepted and/or published);
  • Completion of at least 10 Masters students and at least 2 completed doctoral students as the main or co-supervisor;
  • Evidence of substantial engagement, leadership and external funding;
  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards; and
  • Evidence of a developing network of national and/or international research collaborations.
Associate Professor
  • A relevant doctorate degree in financial sciences related fields and registration at a professional body;
  • 6 years tertiary teaching experience on undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • An established research focus with;
  • At least 5 accredited publications and/or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs of which at least 3 accredited publications and/or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs should be in the last 5 years accepted and/or published;
  • Completion of at least 4 completed Masters students over the past 5 years;
  • Involvement with at least one doctoral student as the main or co-supervisor;
  • Evidence of research grants or awards; and
  • Evidence of a developing network of national and/or international research collaborations.
Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)
  • Strategic, academic and operational management of the Department which includes m anaging departmental finances and optimising resource use;
  • Good understanding of professional qualifications and liaison with professional bodies;
  • Encourage inter- and transdisciplinary research as well as teaching and learning opportunities;
  • Excellent teaching and research skills;
  • Marketing and growing the Department on all levels;
  • Ensuring adherence to university policies and governance structures;
  • Promoting teamwork and an inclusive, supportive and respectful work environment for all staff and students in the department;
  • Ability to facilitate e-learning and e-communication;
  • Attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Ability to work under pressure ;
  • Ability to conduct departmental events;
  • Excellent presentation skills; and
  • Ability to set a clear vision for the department and motivate the team to achieve goals.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES
  • Experience in management at a tertiary institution or participation in administrative duties;
  • Strong leadership and communication skills;
  • International recognition;
  • An exceptional research record in one of the departments research specialisation fields.
  • NRF rating or ready to apply.
REMUNERATION AND APPOINTMENT

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

The Head of Department is a term appointment for four (4) years.
