Wits invites applications for the position of Educational Technologist within its Faculty Teaching and Learning Office of the Faculty of Health Sciences. This 18-month contract role is based on-site in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
The Educational Technologist will collaborate with academic staff and multidisciplinary teams to improve learning and teaching through the effective integration of educational technologies, including the institutional Learning Management System (LMS), into learning experiences. This includes developing professional learning resources and facilitating workshops.
The role will suit a self-motivated professional passionate about leveraging innovative educational technologies to support self-directed and inclusive learning. The ideal candidate will remain informed of emerging trends in innovative educational technology solutions and learning experience design and will be comfortable communicating with stakeholders across various institutional settings.
Brief Description
The Educational Technologist Will
- Design, develop and implement technology-supported learning experiences by integrating AI and LMS tools in collaboration with academic staff.
- Provide continuous professional learning opportunities and support to educators on effective use of educational technologies for learning and teaching.
- Develop and implement engaging learning materials and resources that leverage technology to improve student learning experiences in collaboration with academic staff.
- Engage in scholarly practices centred on emerging educational technologies to inform and improve university teaching and student learning.
- Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to community initiatives to advance learning and teaching excellence in the Faculty.
- Advanced diploma or Bachelors degree in the field of academic development (e.g. education, curriculum, educational technology, learning experience design, computer-integrated education) or other relevant discipline is required for this position.
- A minimum of 2 years of working experience in a complex, preferably Higher Education environment, including supporting the integration of educational technologies appropriately in the design, development, teaching, and coordination of online and/or blended learning programmes
- Experience in integrating Generative AI tools in student learning interactions and university teaching would be preferred.
- 3 or more years of experience supporting a wide range of educational technologies, including Learning Management Systems (LMSs), and using them for online and blended learning programme development, would be advantageous.
- Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to community initiatives to advance learning and teaching excellence in the faculty.
- Good knowledge of educational theory and practice
- Higher Education experience including proven expertise in constructively aligned blended and/or online curriculum development, including learning experience and interactive learning materials design, and valid, authentic on-campus and remote assessment.
- Excellent facilitation, inter-personal, and communication skills.
- Advanced skill in using educational technologies to promote engaged student learning
- Willingness to engage in continuing professional and personal learning.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work independently and in teams.
- High level of proficiency in Office365, and Learning Management Systems such as Canvas and/or Moodle, and a wide variety of other educational technologies.
