Job summary

You will work to d eliver across an exciting policy portfolio which ranges from producing guidance for the FCDO country network on how to work with civil society organisations (CSOs) and respond to restrictions to civic space, to influencing the UN to be more inclusive in its stakeholder engagement.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and leading on the Departments contribution to FCDOs engagement with civil society and will focus on securing strategic senior official and Ministerial engagement with the sector and raising the profile of the UK as a global beacon of civic space. In emergent crisis, you will need to provide advice to relevant teams on setting up engagement between civil society and the FCDO. For example, in the past the team has worked on shaping engagement on Afghanistan and Ukraine.

There is a high level of Ministerial and Parliamentary interest in this area of work, making this an exciting, influential, and fast-paced role. You will be required to manage multiple demands simultaneously.

As with all roles, the successful candidate will be expected to be flexible and to support priorities in the team and across the directorate as required.

You will be expected to remain in your initial FCDO role for at least two years.

Job Description

In this role you will also be responsible for:
  • Ensuring FCDO Ministers and senior officials are supported in engaging effectively with the civil society sector and delivering quality and timely briefing.
  • Supporting CSCSs structured engagement with CSOs to deliver a streamlined approach at all levels (Ministers and officials) in order for CSOs to share their views and expertise on key policy issues.
  • Facilitating the FCDOs structured engagement with CSOs in response to emerging and protracted crises.
  • Being the key point of contact and managing the relationship with Bond (the UK umbrella network for CSOs working in international development) and other CSO networks.
  • Responding as needed to briefing requests for Ministers, ministerial correspondence, treat officials and parliamentary questions to a high quality within assigned deadlines.
Person specification

You must be a British Citizen at the time of application and, if invited to interview, you will need to bring proof of identity (British Passport/Driving Licence etc.) with you.

This role requires you to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.

At least one year of this must have been a consecutive twelve-month period. Serving overseas with HM Forces, in some other official capacity as a representative of His Majestys Government, or having lived overseas as a result of your parents or partners Government employment counts as UK residency for the purposes of security clearances.
