Job Advert Summary

An exciting new Technical Underwriter opportunity has just become available in our Insure (Technical Commercial Underwriting) team.

Role Objectives

Provide underwriting expertise to the branches and brokers for Commercial Lines Business. Conduct technical underwriting assessments, assist with training for branches when required. Monitor that the branch underwriting complies with the UW guidelines/mandates. Develop underwriting and remediation best practice methodologies, thereby increasing the underwriting capabilities of the branches. Provide Customer focus on a national basis.

Key Responsibilities

UNDERWRITING
  • Underwrite/Assess and accept risks outside branch mandates within agreed turnaround times and ensuring business excellence
  • Develop and maintain key relationships with Branches, Brokers and other Customers
  • Provide branch support for complex quotes/renewals
  • Assess branch technical underwriting, provide recommendations, and follow up on amendments required
  • Provide training as required or if requested
  • Assist branches on underwriting of Asset All Risk policies
GUIDELINES AND WORDINGS
  • Ensure branch adherence to Commercial Lines Underwriting Guidelines
  • Assist in enhancing Commercial Lines wordings and guidelines
  • Assist in documenting and supporting IT implementation for policy schedule and wording changes
  • Assist in reviewing Policy Wordings for Brokers and Branches
REINSURANCE
  • Assist branches with facultative placements
  • Place reinsurance on FAC Facility system
  • Monitoring of Facultative reinsurance
  • Referral of large risks to Hollard treaty Reinsurers
  • Identify training and development needs within branches
REPORTING
  • Provision of monthly underwriting reports and other relevant management information as required
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
  • Assist with IT projects such as underwriting system development for new products or existing product changes with the companys internal IT system or that of service providers
  • Gain market intelligence: Continuous research on competitor products. Network with peers in the industry to keep abreast of latest insurance trends
  • Provision and analysis of market developments to Hollard Insure Team and partners
  • Ad-hoc Projects as may be requested by management
Required Knowledge And Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years underwriting experience in commercial insurance
  • Minimum of 3 years technical underwriting experience in commercial insurance
  • Sound knowledge of insurance industry and principles especially Commercial Lines insurance
  • Experience in handling complex or large commercial accounts
  • Experience in rating the major classes of business
  • Knowledge of various policy wordings including but not limited to Business Policies
  • Experience in drafting policy documentation (wordings, policy schedules and endorsements)
  • Experience in Reinsurance will be an advantage
  • Knowledge of S.A. Insurance market and competitors
  • Claims knowledge/experience will be an advantage
Educational Requirements
  • Matric
  • Advanced Short Term Insurance NQF 5 - or equivalent advantageous with desire to study further
  • Maintaining personal development related to CPD and RE (keep up to date with legislative changes in the industry
