ASSISTANT DEAN: TEACHING AND LEARNING (DISTANCE PRINCIPLES)

Job Purpose

To plan for, implement, monitor, evaluate, manage and report on matters, issues and solutions related to teaching, instructional models, learning, and assessment for qualifications offered in the Distance mode of delivery at IIE Rosebank College. To support technology-enabled Distance Learning and in the success of distance students. To report on challenges and solutions/improvements as and when necessary and to actively promote the Scholarship of Distance Teaching and Learning within IIE Rosebank College. To actively drive transformation against sectorial indicators, initiatives and regulatory requirements in the Distance mode of delivery.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Leadership and management of T&L activities in the distance mode of delivery
  • Track the progress of IIE RC's Distance students at various levels using evidenced-based decision-making aligned to best practice.
  • Support online and distance support centre portfolios (including Academics, Information Services and Student wellness) to manage Teaching and Learning practices and develop academic leadership in Distance Education.
  • Develop, monitor and report on annual Distance Teaching and learning objectives at national and faculty levels.
  • Analyse and report on academic results for the Distance mode of delivery.
  • Mentor the Distance academic team to promote the best distance online Teaching and Learning practices, including providing upskilling support.
  • Lead the review and development of the Distance Education policy, its implementation, and alignment with The IIE Strategic Plan, Teaching and Learning-related policies, and the Academic Strategy (where applicable).
  • Plan, communicate and monitor the sustainable implementation of the Distance Education policy, focusing on support initiatives and planning for capacity where needed.
  • Participate in the design, planning and rollout of teaching and learning projects based on business requirements.
  • Identify, coordinate and supervise academic activities and projects to ensure goals are met, with a forecast between 1 and 2 years
  • Management of and/or leadership to relevant stakeholders.
  • Quality assurance and promotion of Teaching and Learning nationally.
  • Implement, manage, monitor and evidence-based intervention planning concerning policy compliance typically include BRRC, Peer Review, Internal Moderation, Academic Integrity, Charles Freysen, SET, PULSE (may include library) and capacity planning.
  • Liaise with the IIE CAT on matters that impact Distance TL and related policy directives.
  • Implement institutional policies and procedures for Distance Teaching and Learning through monitoring, evaluation, action planning and developmental intervention.
  • Evaluate the impact of the implementation of the Distance Education Policy and other related policies, taking into consideration external and internal factors (including current international research of best practice) to inform ideas on improvements, as and when necessary.
  • Manage the Key Performance Outputs of the academic and student support portfolios at IIERCs Online Centre.
  • Manage Key Performance Outputs of designated Distance Support Centre Staff members.
  • Promote a culture of disciplinary-based and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research among the Distance academic cohort. Required to contribute towards achieving the IIE annual research output targets.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • NQF-level 9 Masters Degree in Distance Learning, Education, Education Technology or similar
Experience
  • Higher Education Management in Distance Education or Education Technology Support or Open Education context 5 Years
  • People management 3 Years
  • Lecturing/ facilitation of Distance students using educational technology (2 Years)
Key Competencies
  • Knowledge and understanding of the South African higher education systems and regulatory framework. Knowledge and understanding of the Teaching and Learning theory and interventions.
  • The ability to provide student support services.
  • The ability to work with and learn more about digitalized academic platforms.
  • The ability to cope with a frequently changing environment and to adapt to evolving situations.
  • Ability to adhere to rules and strictly follow work regulations.
  • Deadline orientated and can work well under pressure.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.
