Senior Research Manager

In delivering social science that makes a difference the Research Divisions, Units, Institutes and Centres of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) undertake policy-oriented research from its offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, and Pietermaritzburg. Our public purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Equitable Education and Economies (EEE) division undertakes research to transform educational outcomes and increase economic participation. It recognises that education and the economy have long been linked, and conducts research to understand educational performance and improve learning outcomes, and to interrogate social, spatial and structural obstacles to economic participation.

The EEE Research Division has a new project, UGood, which aims to test and further develop relational approaches to wellbeing (RWB); and generate empirical insights into key contemporary challenges to young peoples wellbeing, and how they are addressing these. The programme is structured into four thematic areas to focus on the wellbeing of Young People with regards to: Livelihoods, Climate change, Digitalisation and Mental health.

The research programme will be implemented over five interrelated work packages: 1) the funding of research projects focusing on young people in the 12 focus countries, 2) capacity strengthening of young people and researchers, 3) the development of a community of practice, 4) monitoring, evaluation and strategic learning and 5) communication and dissemination. In line with the ethos of the programme it seeks to employ and approach to monitoring and evaluation that is novel, strategic, learning-oriented and appropriate to the challenges the research programme seeks to understand and have a positive impact on.

EEE is looking to appoint an experienced, Senior Research Manager with expertise in the area of Monitoring and Evaluation, for a period of 4 years to be based in either the HSRCs Cape Town or Pretoria Offices, commencing on 1 June 2024. The incumbent will thus be expected to drive and coordinate the monitoring and evaluation function and supporting activities across the work packages to enable strategic learning.
