Job Description
The Institute for Healing of Memories is seeking an inspiring individual to coordinate community healing dialogues and youth activities in Gauteng Province. This position is based at the IHOM Office, NG Kempton Park.
The community healing dialogues aim to promote understanding of reconciliation, human rights and transformative justice, and to facilitate a wider dialogue. The dialogues address a wide range of topics and concerns including human rights, xenophobia, community violence, healign the wounds of history and gender based violence.
The youth activities aim to equip young people with the capacity and skills to address actions and attitudes that harm or destroy human dignity in their community and to re-draw damaging patterns of behaviour. Participants assess the individual, social, economic and political factors that undermine equal worth and contribute to destructive feelings of inferiority and alienation in the neighbourhoods where they live. Learning processes are including workshops, youth platforms, story-telling circles and remembering visits.
Background
The IHOM seeks to contribute to lasting individual and collective healing that makes possible a more peaceful and just future. The projects activities are built on three specific objectives:
- Prevention: Breaking the cycle of dehumanisation, by which victims frequently become victimisers,
- Healing: Restoring an enduring dignity, purpose and hope to marginalised individuals and communities, and;
- Empowerment: Making new pathways possible by equipping individuals with the emotional tools to retake charge of their own lives.
- Organize community healing dialogues.
- Organize youth activities.
- Submit annual operational plans to the Directors.
- Organize facilitator training sessions and facilitators meetings with youth.
- Ensure all invoices and receipts are submitted to the financial manager for payment and record-keeping before activities occur.
- Build partnerships within communities and with organizations sharing similar goals.
- Submit activity reports within four (4) days of completing an activity. Submit monthly reports to the Directors.
- Maintaining accurate records and evaluations for all activities.
- Diploma or Certificate in Community Development or Conflict Studies or Peacebuilding or other related field.
- Minimum of two years experience working with communities in South Africa.
- Experience in project management.
- Experience in community development.
- Strong ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated passion and commitment to healing and social justice.
- Ability to work both collaboratively as part of a team and independently.
- Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, with proficiency in MS Office.
- Strong report writing and facilitation skills. Basic understanding of monitoring and evaluation concepts.
- Proficiency in English is required and the ability to speak isiZulu, Afrikaans, and isiXhosa is an added advantage.
- Flexible schedule with the ability to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Valid South African drivers license.
- Must be based in Gauteng.
