About The Job
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Laboratory Manager in the Transport Infrastructure Engineering (TIE) Impact Area within Smart Mobility (SM) cluster. The incumbent will manage the operations of the laboratories in accordance with the objectives and requirements of the TIE group and SM cluster. This position is based in Pretoria.
Key Responsibilities
- Overall management of laboratory systems and maintenance of applicable accreditations (all sections) ISO 17025, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001;
- Provide technical expertise to the Smart Mobility cluster;
- Provide research and development support and testing for transport infrastructure research;
- Serve as a technical signatory for areas managed;
- Communicate with higher management regarding laboratory operations;
- Outline laboratory needs and strategic plans;
- Ensure expansion of testing capabilities;
- Manage and develop human resources in the laboratory environment;
- Optimise resource and equipment planning for the laboratories;
- Ensure procurement of lab items and equipment are done efficiently;
- Ensure lab sustainability by maintaining reagent and supply inventory;
- Budget to achieve financial targets set for the laboratories and ensure financial sustainability;
- Draft proposals for lab and consultancy projects;
- Write technical reports for tests and consultations;
- Market/ represent the laboratory (and cluster) in industry;
- Identify new business opportunities for continual business development;
- Liaise with internal and external clients;
- Provide technical and/or business innovation;
- A Bachelor degree in Science, Engineering or equivalent with at least eight years experience in the management of road engineering and materials testing laboratory
- Proficient in MS Office;
- Must have thorough understanding or training background in the requirements of ISO 17025 and knowledge of EHS systems;
- Able to communicate technical information to a diverse audience drawing on sound understanding of scientific principles in solving complex problems;
- Excellent interpersonal relationship and stakeholders liaison skills
- Good communication skills (verbal and written);
- Good interpersonal and team skills;
- Ability to liaise with a diverse portfolio of people locally and internationally;
- A proven record of writing high quality technical reports;
- Ability to handle more than one task/issue at a time and to cope with industry pressure and demands;
- Computer literacy and able to pay attention to details.
