- Design undergraduate and postgraduate courses and modules in English Literary and Cultural Studies across a range of periods, genres and theoretical approaches.
- Administer and examine various courses in the fields of English Literary and Cultural Studies.
- Teach across a range of modules/units using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods and technology.
- Advance own area of independent research in English Literary and Cultural Studies as appropriate to the work of the Department, ensuring a commitment to the highest standards of ethics and integrity in research.
- Participate in the Departmental and Faculty seminars aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the Department.
- Publish peer reviewed research outputs in accordance with the requirements of the University of the Free State for the specific position.
- Conduct administrative work related to teaching, research and institutional obligations.
- Contribute to community engagement projects of the Department.
- Take an active role in helping to accomplish the departments long-term vision.
Lecturer
- A PhD in English Literature and/or Cultural Studies on NQF Level 10 (for a permanent appointment)
- Masters degree in English Literature and/or Cultural Studies on NQF Level 9 (contract appointment: five years during which a PhD on NQF Level 10 in English Literature and/or Cultural Studies MUST be obtained to be converted to a permanent position).
- Proven experience in the delivery of poster or oral presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
- Evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication in accredited journals.
- A good academic record.
- PhD on NQF Level 10 in English Literature and/or Cultural Studies.
- Proven experience in the presentation of papers/posters at national scholarly conferences.
- Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship.
- An NRF rating or demonstrated potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
- Proven experience in supervision of graduated masters degree students.
- A proven research record of relevant publication/s in peer reviewed national and international accredited scientific journals.
- Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society or committee or agency concerned with research at higher-education levels.
Lecturer:
- A minimum of three (3) years experience in teaching English Literature and/or Cultural Studies at university level and in preparing study guides for undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
- A record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and Honours levels, and a promising record of research in any area of World Literatures in English, especially African Literatures and Cultures.
- Organisational skills to coordinate modules with large student numbers.
- A minimum of three (3) years experience in teaching English Literature and/or Cultural Studies at university level and in preparing study guides for undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
- A record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and Honours levels, and a promising record of research in any area of World Literatures in English, especially African Literatures and Cultures.
- A record of excellence in postgraduate supervision at MA level.
- Evidence of successful grant applications with competitive funding bodies such as the National Research Foundation (NRF).
