NEW GENERATION OF ACADEMICS PROGRAMME (nGAP)
LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER

Background
The Department of Higher Education and Training is implementing the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) under Staffing South Africas Universities Framework (SSAUF) in partnership with South African state universities. Phase 10 of the nGAP has been approved by the DHET and its implementation is currently underway. The University of Pretoria has been allocated 7 posts for this phase as mentioned below. The posts are institution-based and permanent. The aim of this advertisement is to recruit candidates that have a passion for pursuing a career in academia and to improve the equity profile of the University, which constitutes an important aspect of the nGAP and UPs Strategic Plan. Consequently, the University invites applicants who are 40 years or younger with a Masters or PhD degree or who are currently enrolled or plan to enrol for a PhD degree and who are from under-represented designated groups to apply for positions in the departments listed below.

Responsibilities
The incumbents will be required to:
- Participate in a formal development programme aimed at strengthening their aspirations and skills as researchers and lecturers;
- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses;
- Mentor and supervise postgraduate students;
- Conduct collaborative research in their research specialisation areas;
- Play an active role as academics, nationally and internationally;
- Complete their PhD studies in instances where these have not yet been completed;
- Assume limited administration responsibilities in their departments.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A Masters degree with a 70% average mark in the relevant discipline;
- Illustrate the potential to become a competent lecturer at the undergraduate level;
- Illustrate strong potential to become an established researcher.
- A relevant doctoral degree;
- Proven teaching experience;
- Proven record of publications;
- Proven record of supervision of postgraduate students to completion.
For Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering: A BEng/BScEng degree in Metallurgical Engineering or closely related discipline from a university of which the undergraduate programme is registrable with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) for PrEng registrations purposes / A Masters degree in Metallurgical Engineering or closely related discipline that follows on the previous qualification / A PhD degree in Metallurgical Engineering or closely related discipline, that follows on the previous qualification, with a focus on Power Metallurgy.
For Informatics: A Masters degree in Informatics or closely related discipline / A Doctorate in Informatics or closely related discipline, that follows on the previous qualification, with a focus on Information Systems.
For ICT, Innovation and Law (Private Law): A Masters degree in Intellectual Property Law, Cyber Law, Law and Technology or relevant discipline / A Doctoral degree in Intellectual Property Law, Cyber Law, Law and Technology or relevant doctoral degree.
For Religion Studies: A Masters degree in Theology or relevant discipline / A Doctoral degree in Religion Studies or relevant doctoral degree.
For Christian Ethics and Spirituality (Systematic and Historical Theology): A Masters degree in Theological Ethics/ Systematic Theology/ Dogmatics/ Contextual Theology / Spirituality / A Doctoral degree in Theological Ethics/ Systematic Theology/ Contextual Theology / Dogmatics/ Spirituality.
Recommendations
- Good communication skills;
- Interpersonal- and mentoring skills;
- Leadership potential;
- Experience in interdisciplinary, collaborative research;
- Proven record of national and international teamwork;
- Some first author publications in peer-reviewed journals
- One-year teaching/tutoring and research experience at undergraduate/postgraduate levels (lecturer)
