PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
This position is responsible for the development, delivery, and coordination of Midwifery modules in the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes in the School of Nursing Science, Potchefstroom, North-West University. Key responsibilities will include engaging in
teaching and learning activities, academic quality assurance, curriculum development, support in e-learning, tutor capacity development and leadership in the trends of higher education and statutory regulations. Active participation within the School of Nursing Science, Potchefstroom campus, North-West University research programmes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME
  • Maintaining knowledge, skills, and competencies in a discipline/field relevant to Midwifery and in effective teaching and learning practices in that discipline/field.
  • Designing, developing, evaluating, and improving curricula.
  • Utilise knowledge of contemporary, evidence-based teaching and learning practices to develop education resources in the School of Nursing
  • Science (Potchefstroom campus); develop, coordinate and deliver courses and programs designed for flexible delivery using a range of teaching and learning methodologies within the
  • Undergraduate Programme within the School of Nursing Science (Potchefstroom campus); coordinate the timely delivery of modules including the preparation and delivery of lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, assessment and marking; coordination of module review and re-development processes; provide timely academic counselling and advice to students; develop a network of contacts to support and contribute to the delivery and development of modules;
  • Work with the staff at the School of Nursing Science (Potchefstroom campus) in the smooth operation of the undergraduate programme.
  • Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goal and enable it to be a healthy organisation.
  • This includes being a member of university committees and working parties, as well as taking on roles such as key coordination roles within the University.
SIMULATION LABORATORY:
  • Engaging the Community and Industry by liaising with relevant stakeholders including Industry, government, university, education and community bodies and the South African Nursing Council.
  • Initiate, foster and enhance national links with relevant industry, government, university and community bodies that can assist in the advancement of the School of Nursing Science (Potchefstroom campus).
  • Sound connections with relevant professional bodies and community groups and/or in professional practice
ADMINISTRATION:
  • Research and Scholarship by conducting research and disseminate research outcomes in a relevant and appropriate manner; attract and supervise higher degree students; enhance the research profile of the School of Nursing Science (Potchefstroom).
  • A track record of research activity, including refereed publications, external grants; and a number of post graduate students delivered.
  • Developing and maintaining strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national and international levels.
  • Developing and exploiting intellectual property.
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conductive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in research
PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE
  • Management and Administration by planning, reviewing and managing resources to facilitate teaching and learning in the School; advise and support on innovation and good practice in teaching and learning and research
  • Represent the School of Nursing Science (Potchefstroom campus) in relevant internal and external groups, meetings and committees as appropriate
  • Contribute to the development of the school through academic leadership and participation in strategic.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
  • Initiatives; and actively participate in the performance engagement process and development activities.
INCIDENTS
  • The practical accompaniment of students at different clinical accredited facilities as allocated to the School of Nursing Science (Potchefstroom campus) undergraduate programme.
FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)
  • Provide service to the North-West University (Potchefstroom) by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation.
  • This includes being a member or chair of university committees and working parties, as well as taking on roles such as key coordination roles within the University
  • Developing and maintaining strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national and international levels.
  • Act as moderator to North-West College of Nursing (Klerksdorp) within subject specific modules according to task agreement arrangements
  • Candidate must be willing to accompany students in various accredited practical settings affiliated to the School of Nursing Science, Potchefstroom campus
  • Communicating appropriately and effectively with students, other staff and individuals inside and outside the University
  • A high level of professional and ethical conduct.
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES
  • Demonstrate a high standard of interpersonal and communications skills including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Computer literacy, with the ability to use various Microsoft programmes e.g., emails, internet
  • Strong personal qualities and collegial approaches that contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment
  • The ability to function effectively under pressure
  • The ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations and function effectively as part of a team
  • The ability to function internally and externally on various levels
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU.
Minimum requirements
Associate Professor
  • A Nursing degree with General Nursing Science, Midwifery, Community and Psychiatric Nursing Science.
  • A degree or Diploma in Nursing Education
  • A PhD in Nursing.
  • A degree or diploma in Advanced Midwifery.
  • Registered with South African Nursing Council (SANC) as Assessor and/or Moderator.
  • A minimum of 5 years teaching experience in a tertiary environment
  • A minimum of 5 years clinical experience as a Professional Nurse.
  • Supervised a minimum of 1 masters student to completion.
  • Assisted a minimum of 1 student in PhD promotion.
  • A minimum of 2 peer reviewed publications/articles.
Senior Lecturer
  • A Nursing degree with General Nursing Science, Midwifery, Community and Psychiatric Nursing Science.
  • A degree or Diploma in Nursing Education
  • A degree or diploma in Advanced Midwifery.
  • Registered with South African Nursing Council (SANC) as Assessor and/or Moderator
  • A minimum of 5 years teaching experience in a tertiary environment
  • A minimum of 5 years clinical experience as a Professional Nurse.
  • Supervised a minimum of 1 masters student to completion.
  • Recommendations (Senior Lecturer level):
  • PhD in Nursing.
  • Assisted a minimum of 1 student in PhD promotion.
  • A minimum of 2 peer reviewed publications/articles.
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy
guidelines.
