Who should apply?

If you are a junior researcher (completed your doctorate no longer than 5 years ago) with a record of publications and keen on pursuing collaborative publication on legal pluralism issues in private or public law, or comparative constitutional judicialism (cross-judicial fertilization), you are welcome to submit an application.

Background

The fellowship is a new initiative of the North-West University. It aims to appoint a post-doc fellow to team up with NRF B-rated researchers to co-publish peer-reviewed contributions in their key research and innovation, to enhance their academic stature.

Although more collaboration opportunities between the team members are possible, the emphasis will be on four areas:
  • Produce at least four (4) peer-reviewed co-authored publications per year.
  • Supervise or co-supervise at least one masters and one doctorate student per year.
  • Participate in grant writing and submit at least one grant proposal per year.
  • Participate in administration, report writing, and facilitation of research activities as delegated.
  • Academic support to Prof C Rautenbach when needed.
  • Provide support with undergraduate teaching and learning when requested

Period of support and value of fellowship

The fellowship will initially be for one (1) year and can be renewed annually for up to five (4) years, subject to satisfactory research outputs.

The maximum stipend is currently R438 000 per year. It is subject to satisfactory outputs and will be reevaluated annually.

Please Note: The cost of relocation to Potchefstroom will be for your own account.

Requirements and application deadline

Because the appointment is for a senior post-doc fellow position, you must have sufficient evidence of publications.

The following documents must be submitted upon application.
  • Proof of doctoral qualification (copy of your doctoral degree (e.g. PhD or LLD). Your doctoral degree should not be older than five (5) years.
  • Copy of your curriculum vitae (CV), including a list of publications.
  • A motivation letter with a synopsis of your research plans, including an acknowledgement that you will be required to be physically present in Potchefstroom for the duration of the fellowship.
  • Copy of your identity document or passport (photo page). Honouring the purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship programme (to develop and prepare for an academic career), fellows will typically be younger than 45 years of age.
  • A reference letter.
  • If you are an international fellow, a copy of your visa or residence permit.
  • If you are involved with another institution, it is advisable to include a letter confirming that you will be released from responsibilities during the fellowship to be available for a full-time fellowship at NWU.
How The Selection Works

The applications will be evaluated as soon as possible after the submission date. If shortlisted, you will be contacted for an interview before making a final decision. If successful, the fellowship will commence on 1 January 2024, or as soon as all the legal formalities have been finalised.
