Tailings Project Engineer

The Company
Our client operates on a large-scale copper and cobalt deposits, both open pit and underground, with high-grade mineral reserves. Metals production is conducted using up-to-date metallurgical processing. They are one of the world's largest diversified natural resource companies, producing and marketing over 90 commodities worldwide. The company's operations include copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals mining.

The Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a Project Execution Control framework to facilitate delivery of Asset Environmental and Social projects around tailings management. The framework should focus on a universally applicable approach to influence and align design and study phases and proactively set up the phases for success to optimize project delivery, promote vision and play a key role in achieving department tailings related project objectives. The successful candidates will be based in Johannesburg, South Africa, with regular travel to the DRC.

Responsibilities
  • Identify and manage key stakeholders.
  • Liaise with business and other stakeholders to elicit and clarify requirements, including assessing implementation feasibility and delivery.
  • Assist in the tracking and implementation of action plans to meet applicable Standards and Guidelines.
  • Perform tasks in accordance with quality procedures or requirements as applicable.
  • Review and provide feedback on applicable project quality procedures.
  • Progress the program through the lifecycle processes.
  • Preparation of reporting for project activities including schedule, budgets and cost tracking.
  • Oversee all compliance project work within the programme.
  • Report on planning and progress.
  • Coordinate programme resourcing.
  • Engagement of consultants for works initiatives including preparation of scopes, tendering, assessment and award processes.
  • Management of consultant activities on a day-to-day basis.
  • Co-ordinate the efforts of all involved and oversee projects and studies.
  • Support the Assets in undertaking Gap Assessments against the environmental and social knowledge base based on the area of influence of the TSFs.
  • Support TSF Risk Manager in the development of actions plans to address environmental and social knowledge base.
  • Be an effective safety leader and behaviour modelling for the project team and contractors.
  • Actively engage all relevant stakeholders.
  • Experience in identifying business integration and optimizing business operations by reducing or eliminating integration requirements.
  • Conduct optimisation exercises in the study stages, incorporating an appreciation various factors influencing project related objectives.
  • Maintain a Project Execution Control framework to facilitate delivery of Asset Environmental and Social projects around tailings management.
  • The framework should focus on a universally applicable approach to influence and align design and study phases and proactively set up the phases for success to optimize project delivery.
  • Actively collaborate and integrate with design engineering, technical and project planning teams to shape the profile of projects by introducing industry best practice approaches to project design and execution.
  • Actively apply expert knowledge and thought leadership to challenge paradigms and lead project teams in the application of conventional and novel methodologies in exploring options that will expedite project execution and potentially realise capital savings.
  • Lead the analysis and identification of opportunities to enable step changes in value realisation by creating novel management and technical pathways for the integration and/or adaptation of project cycle time activities and sequencing to drive cost reduction, mitigate project risk and ensure sustainability of operations post commissioning.
  • Apply rigorous assessment of project teams to ensure that they have the required capability, are optimally integrated and focused on driving value.
  • Initiate decisive action to address any shortcomings by advising project leadership on options to restore team integrity.
The Requirements
  • An undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honours degree or equivalent) in geotechnical and water resource engineering.
  • +7 years experience in operations or project management in the copper mining industry.
  • Experience in tailings, environmental and social performance management.
  • Experience in project studies, finance, schedule development and execution.
  • Background or experience in change programs is beneficial.
  • Experience in environmental and social impact assessments is desirable.
  • Direct experience and a very good understanding of the need for formal project disciplines.
  • Experience in management of risk, change processes, schedule- and budget required.
  • Multi-tasking and excellent management of personal time and priorities is essential.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills that work effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated, well-developed judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to promote vision and play a key role in achieving department tailings related project objectives.
  • Proficiency in defining and communicating business problems and opportunities against the objective of introducing solutions and improvements.
  • Domain knowledge of copper mining and a technical background.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team, a diplomat and resilience will also be essential attributes to the role.
  • Business acumen and strategic agility, coupled with personal drive and team orientation.
