R&D Applications Intern

Watchmaker Genomics is seeking applications for an on-site, entry level, temporary position as a R&D Intern in our Cape Town office.

The R&D Intern will work under the supervision of the R&D Principal Scientist in the Applications team. The intern's responsibilities include executing daily tasks such as PCR and qPCR optimization, next-generation-sequencing (NGS) sample preparation, and enzyme assays. The intern is expected to provide accurate, consistent and timely results to the R&D Applications Group, and other project teams as required.

As an R&D intern you will have the opportunity to learn and grow in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, while directly contributing to the success and culture of a global organization. This role will present unique challenges and learning opportunities to support a global organization.

Responsibilities
  • Accurately prepare standard buffered chemical solutions and microbiology media; maintain and calibrate equipment; and manage stocks of laboratory reagents and consumables.
  • Plan and perform molecular biology and biochemistry experiments including: PCR and qPCR; NGS sample preparation, and enzyme assays.
  • Accurately document details of all experiments in an electronic lab notebook; meticulously analyse and interpret data; and regularly present results and project status updates to managers and peers for discussion.
  • Contribute meaningfully to an international team responsible for the launch of commercially successful genomics products.
The following skills and experience are requirements for the position:
  • Experience and detailed knowledge in one or more of the following areas: PCR and qPCR; NGS; analysis of NGS data; gene cloning; recombinant protein expression and purification; enzyme characterisation; knowledge of DNA- and RNA-modifying enzymes.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute, analyse, and troubleshoot experiments.
  • Excellent organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • The ability to multitask, perform consistently under pressure and work without supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work as an effective member of a team.
  • Good communication and personal task management skills and a high level of self-motivation and initiative.
  • A creative and disciplined approach to problem-solving.
Education And Experience
  • MSc in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline with 0-3 years of relevant experience or
  • BSc Honours in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline with 2 - 6 years relevant work experience.
