Researcher post for African Centre for Biodiversity

The African Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) seeks to employ critical, self-motivated and independent thinkers to join our dynamic team to support research and advocacy in southern and eastern Africa, focusing on farmer seed systems in the so-called ‘informal’ seed sector and agro-ecology. The position will involve conducting desktop and field research with ACB, producing high quality research reports, facilitating participatory processes of action research, participating in and coordinating diverse research projects in partnership with civil society organisations and farmer associations in the region, and working with the ACB team on communications and advocacy at national and regional levels arising from the research.

 Minimum requirements:

  • A recognised Masters’ degree;
  • A minimum of 5-8 years of relevant and related research experience (e.g. seed systems, agro-ecology, small-scale farmers, farming systems, farmer organisation, agricultural policies related to small-scale farmers, biosafety, GMOs, corporate control of food systems)
  • Proven analytical and English writing skills (based on writing samples);
  • Ability to work independently and to tight deadlines with minimal supervision;
  • Good computer skills including word processing and web research;
  • A valid drivers’ licence.

 The following will be an advantage:

  • A history of social/environmental activism;
  • Experience in working with a diversity of social actors, including small-scale farmers,;
  • Experience in policy engagement at national and regional levels;
  • Experience in coordinating multi-locational research projects incorporating field work;
  • Experience in participatory action research methodologies;
  • Ability to speak another language in SADC apart from English.

The successful candidate will be based in Johannesburg but with significant regional travel. Costs of relocation can be negotiated if necessary.

ACB has an Employment Equity policy in place, and agrees on the need for racial and gender transformation in our divided and unequal society. Preference will therefore be given to black African candidates. Citizens from African countries outside South Africa are encouraged to apply.

The candidate must be a good fit with ACB’s organisational culture and ACB reserves the right not to hire anybody to the position. Salary is at competitive market rates.

Interested parties should send a CV to acbresearcher@gmail.com, a one page motivation why you are suitable for the position, and what you will bring to the work of the ACB  and a sample of your written work. Closing Date: 5 May 2016.
