NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY OF HUMANITIES SCHOOL OF MUSIC POSITION NUMBER: P000612 VACANCY: LECTURER/ SENIOR LECTURER PEROMNES GRADE: A7/A8 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The NWU School of Music (Potchefstroom Campus) seeks to appoint one new academic staff member to assume teaching, research and performance responsibilities. Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teaching-learning
  • Exceptional and adequate delivery method of African music theory, musicology, performance, and world music (recommended) in four undergraduate programmes: Diploma in Music, BA (Music), BA (Music) Honours and BMus.
  • Collaborate and build effective relationships for successful model delivery.
  • Research supervision
  • Supervision at undergraduate, masters and doctoral level.
  • Research Entity
  • Own research in any areas of the discipline.
  • Ensembles and part-time staff
  • Artistic and administrative management (in collaboration with the director) of all instrumental and choral dance ensembles and their responsible part-time staff.
  • Management of instruments
  • Management of all African musical instruments in the school, particularly marimbas and drums.
  • Management of musical instrument archive
  • Maintain and develop the NWU musical instrument archive for teaching-learning and research purposes.
  • Community music
  • Involvement in existing projects and innovation of new projects.
Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Lecturer
  • A PhD in African Music Theory, and/or Musicology and/or Performance (NQF Level 10).
  • A minimum of 3 years specialist, lecturing and research experience in African music on a higher education level.
  • Completed postgraduate supervision of at least one student.
  • Acceptable publication of at least 2 accredited articles.
Lecturer
  • A Masters degree in African Music Theory, and/or Musicology and/or Performance (NQF Level 9).
  • A minimum of 1-year relevant experience and knowledge.
Added Advantage
  • Professional registration with the South African Society for Research in Music OR any other applicable professional association.
  • History in promoting community engagement and outreach projects.
  • Thorough knowledge and aptitude in the world of music teaching-learning and research-innovation.
  • Knowledge of the Dalcroze method.
Functional / Technical Competencies (knowledge And Skills)
  • Professional knowledge of African historical and contemporary music theory and musicology.
  • Well-developed African music performance competencies.
  • Knowledge of world music teaching-learning and research (recommendation)
  • Proven research competence in the field of African music.
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to develop African music teaching-learning and research-innovation of the NWU value chain.
  • The ability to present own accurate and assertive research on a variety of public platforms (conferences and publications).
  • Demonstrate the ability to supervise postgraduate research.
