Job Description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The candidate will be responsible for lecturing undergraduate and/or postgraduate statistics modules and can also be expected to be involved in the development of new modules. Other duties include the supervision of postgraduate students, and statistical consultations where one supports staff members, post-doctorate and postgraduate students with the planning, design and statistical analyses of their research projects.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Presenting undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
- Development of new modules and programmes.
- Conducting academic research (publishing research papers, etc.)
- Participate in Statistics outreach activities, and service to the Statistics community.
- Participate in other money stream 3 endeavours, such as the presentation of short courses.
The candidate must be able to:
- Analyse data using advanced statistical techniques by means of suitable statistical computer packages (such as SAS, R, SPSS and STATISTICA).
- Present both undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
- Act as group coordinator for modules with multiple groups.
- Handle large undergraduate classes.
- Handle administrative tasks and take on leadership roles within the subject group.
- Supervise honours/postgraduate students.
- Communicate well in English (verbally and in writing).
- Work independently, but also as a team.
- Have good people skills.
- Professional and ethical behaviour.
- Be able to act as a mentor for junior staff.
- A minimum of three (3) years experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
- A minimum of three (3) years experience with the administration of large class groups.
- Proven track record of supervising students at the honours level.
- Proven research publication record in mathematical & applied statistics.
In addition to the above:
- A PhD (NQF Level 10) in Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics/Computational Statistics or related.
- A masters degree (NQF Level 9) in Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics/Computational Statistics or related.
- A minimum of five (5) years experience in using statistical software.
- A proven track record of papers emanating from statistical consultation projects published in accredited journals.
- Involvement in the relevant academic associations.
