Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Equipment maintenance:
- Ensure equipment is in working order and conduct minor repairs when required. Examples of equipment are: multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, light sources, digital cameras, personal computers and computer interfaces;
- Liaise with the mechanical and electrical/electronic workshops for repairs;
- Provide recommendations for purchase of replacement equipment in consultation with relevant lecturers;
- Liaise with suppliers of equipment for replacement when necessary;
- Maintain inventory of equipment (storage, asset register, etc.);
- Practicals:
- Managing rotation of experimental setups and ensuring the correct equipment is ready;
- Liaising with admin support for scheduling and assist with practical schedules;
- Assisting with demonstrator selection process;
- Training and providing guidance to demonstrators;
- Evaluating demonstrators attendance, conducting and interacting during practical sessions;
- Evaluating practical and learning outcomes (did the appropriate learning take place during the practicals);
- Ensuring the smooth running of practical sessions;
- Tutorials:
- Assisting with the tutor selection process;
- Ensuring materials and equipment for tutorials is available;
- Managing the performance and development of tutors;
- Conducting necessary tutor training and induction;
- Practical design
- Designing, evaluating and sourcing new practical experiments in consultation with lecturers and, where appropriate, assist with local design and manufacture of experimental equipment;
- Improving on existing practicals, including instructional design.
- Relevant National 3-year Diploma with at least one (1) year experience; OR
- Grade 12 with at least three (3) years experience.
- Intermediate pedagogical knowledge and skills;
- Basic mechanical and electrical skills.
- Computer skills, including basic database management and proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel;
- Basic computer maintenance skills;
- Ability to generate innovative solutions in work situations;
- Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with others to encourage and support communication and teamwork;
- Ability to function under pressure and to prioritise;
- Ability to arrange and assign work to use resources efficiently;
- Ability to accomplish tasks and processes accurately and completely.
- BSc in Physics;
- A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE);
- Experience in an institution of higher education.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbents level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
