A Brief Overview
This Senior Underwriter position is responsible for reviewing medical, occupational, financial, foreign risk and legal information to assess the risk on life assurance applications on various accounts. The Senior Underwriter may provide assessments on informal and trial applications. The Senior Underwriter may also assist the Underwriting Manager and/or Team Leader in managing the underwriting activities and staff.
What You Will Do
- Review medical, occupational, avocational and foreign risks, as well as managing large financial and complex life cases from start to finish.
- Review informal and trial applications.
- Calculates the mortality risk on standard, sub-standard and decline risks.
- Exercise discretionary decision making when appropriate and display sound judgment with documentation received to assess the risk.
- Work closely with other team members in Underwriting, Claims, Business Development, Medical Officers and Regional teams to assist in making the best possible underwriting decisions.
- May assist the Underwriting Manager and/or Team Leader in directing activities of the Underwriting Team, including but not limited to mentoring and co-signing of cases.
- Maintain reasonable client expectations with regards to response time and/or service level agreements with limited supervision.
- Daily pro-active telephonic and mail interaction with clients, either enquiries from clients or retrieving additional information needed to assess the risk/s, as well as building relationships with all clients we deal with.
- High level interest, understanding and interaction with Artificial Intelligence advancement.
- Ability to present/train to clients or internal staff on topics associated with Underwriting. This could be at a small audience level or at seminar level.
- Travel, as per the requirements of the business, for client meetings, presentations, training, internal/external events or seminars or for other related activities.
- Grade 12/Matric with Computer Literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- 7+ Years case underwriting experience handling medical and other living benefit products in a direct office environment or 3+ Years experience working as an underwriter in a reinsurance office.
- Underwriting/Financial courses/certifications obtained with direct offices or reinsurers/senior level.
- Presentation skills certification/courses attended or equivalent thereof.
- Strong presentation skills ability to develop and deliver engaging presentations.
- Good knowledge of life insurance processes.
- Possession of a medical qualification would be an advantage
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to build professional relationships with various stakeholders.
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English and Afrikaans.
