Job Description
To perform general interior and exterior carpentry and joinery work throughout the University: owned or leased buildings and facilities.
Responsibilities
- Perform locksmith duties, fitting of various doors, hardwares, closers, and other associated maintenance.
- Perform duties in a timely, professional, and safe manner.
- Work tasks are completed to the satisfaction of the building Supervisor and the Maintenance Manager of the department
- Perform cabinetmaking duties in a competent manner.
- Ensure that all defects are repaired in a timely manner and left in a safe condition.
- Ascertain that preventative maintenance measure is completed in accordance with the university policy and procedures.
- Undertake the preventative maintenance at the required frequency and prioritised accordingly.
- Assist the Supervisor with the management and directing of various building and maintenance contractors
- Ensure compliance with the Health & Safety Act in performing any tasks.
- Assist the manager/foremen in implementing the safety procedures with contractors including safety inductions and hazard identification.
- Ensure that work areas are kept tidy, safely and secure at all times and comply with the OHSA
- Identify hazards to which staff may be exposed to and take preventative measures
- Apply health and safety related skills and knowledge to all work practices
- Attend to carpentry related call-outs to any department or unit as requested;
- Perform minor carpentry projects and new work installation to the satisfaction of the Supervisor.
- Assist the Supervisor in preparation for the quotation for the department
- Provide first class customer service efficiently and effectively.
- Communication with staff and clients in a professional manner.
- Trade Test in Carpentry
- Grade 12 (NQF 4) or equivalent
- Three to Five years appropriate experience in carpentry works.
- A valid code 8 drivers license
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Customer/client focused
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Positive and professional approach
- Ability to work under pressure
- Sound judgement and active listener
- Be physically fit, able to handle equipment and work in difficult situation
- Previous experience in a Higher Education environment
