Openings for Internships at Khanya College for 2016/7

Khanya College is a social justice NGO based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Khanya College has openings for 1-YEAR internships in various aspects of its work, and hereby invites graduate and post-graduate students to apply for positions for internships. Khanya College also encourages candidates with experience in working in the social justice movement to apply, even if they do not have any formal qualifications.

Areas of Interests

The College’s internship programme also provides space for interns to pursue their specific areas of interest, to use their training and enhance their skills, and to contribute to the development of the College and the social justice movement in general through the use of their training in educational institutions or in other organisations of civil society.

The following areas of interest will be considered when interns are engaged:

  • Financial Administrator

  • Jozi Book Fair and Publishing (Marketing and Events)

  • FAJ/Karibu Coordinator

  • Project Admin/ Reception

    The Khanya Internship programme includes structured mentorship and support for interns, and extensive exposure to the social justice and NGO, CBO and social movements sector. In particular, the environment at Khanya College offers Interns the following:

    • A vibrant and progressive working environment

    • Working relationships with diverse communities and other NGOs, museums, research organisations, locally, regionally and internationally

    • Contacts with various institutions that may support career development options into research, writing, ICTs, legal support for working class communities, organising for social justice, programme management work, publishing, and others.

    • Diverse exchange with the public and partnering stakeholders through a wide range of educational and activities and cooperation projects of the College.

    • The possibility of employment in the College on a full-time basis after the Internship.

    • The College offers a stipend and other benefits to the Interns

    Requirements

    • Interest and commitment to social justice in the South African and global contexts. Experience in social justice work in various environments will be an advantage.

    • Basic skills and/or experience in the various areas of interest listed below.

    • Relevant qualification at either tertiary or other levels.

    • Experience in organising in a social justice milieu.

    General work of Interns at Khanya College

    The Internship programme of the College is based on the principle of all round exposure of the Interns to all the aspects of the work of the College. While candidates may have particular areas of interests and specific areas of training, the College’s approach is to deploy the Interns in all areas of its work. In particular the Interns will be expected to be part of the following activities in the College:

    1. Administrative duties.

    This will include filing, reception duty, data-capturing, admin support for various projects, cleaning whenever necessary, and support functions for members of staff.

    2. Organising

    Organising duties will include fieldwork in various projects, organising meetings, organising transport for community delegates to various events, supporting our events department,

    3. Education, Reading, Writing and Learning

    All Khanya interns are expected to participate in political and civic education programme both within and outside the College. This involves participation in study groups; participation in reading and writing programmes; promoting a culture of reading and writing; participation in debates and discussion on current developments in the country.
